Whats up with all the unnecessary name spellings?

What's stupid about not wanting to be the four millionth parent to name their kid Joe? Names are names and always look weird. It's for the best that people make their kid's names different though. It avoids having six Sarah Smiths in a classroom, and the teacher needing to assign them numbers to call them by. Even slightly differently pronounced names help with that.
